This Japanese traditional theme was selected for the Utah Watercolor Society Spring Exhibition. It also received the Award of Excellence in 2018.

A “Classic Coming of Age” ceremony is held each year in Japan for those turning 20 years old. When Mariko turned 20, she followed the Japanese tradition by wearing the kimono and hair style that her mother chose. So when her daughter became of age, and wore the kimono that she had worn when she turned 20, it motivated her to paint this painting – “Classic Coming of Age.”  But Mariko has re-imagined and painted the kimono that she wishes she could have worn for her ceremony.
